Abstract
This research bases on that of the previous year, which explored the gender
consciousness revealing in Tu Fu’s poems, and investigates the shape of Wife in Tu
Fu’s poems. I identify two figures in the Wife-shape: Earth Mother and sern-nu (神
女). The first figure, a common agreement of literature, is the main one in Tu Fu’s
Wife-shape, achieving the ethical value of wife-and-mother. She appears old, thin,
refined and tender, bearing with her husband the burden of a poor family while
always giving helpful hands to family members. This figure also represents the ideal
expectation of Tu Fu on his daughter. However, some Tu Fu’s poems touch conjugal
relation and describe his wife as a pure female, absent from any social role. She is
then a charming and seductive object; a call to erotic pleasure, which is carefully and
diligently circumvented by Confucian Tradition. This sern-nu figure, reflecting the
content of Gung-Ti (宮體) writing, incorporates a male gaze perspective. Thus, the
Wife-shape in Tu Fu’s poems is a complex of two contradictory extremes, Earth
Mother and sern-nu.
