Design and Analysis of a New Claw Rotor Engine

Abstract
This paper describes the development of a new and innovative claw rotor engine. At first, two concept designs of the claw rotor engine are presented, where the advantages and shortcomings are modified to develop the third concept design. The third concept design includes transmission assembly, compression assembly, buffer assembly, combustion assembly, and several intermediate walls located front and rear. The transmission assembly contains a pair of timing gears. Each of the compression and combustion assembly has a housing and a pair of rotors, where the driving rotor has 3 same claws with profiles of repetitive lines and arcs, and the driven rotor profile consists of conjugate curves of the driving rotor. The gears and rotors are mounted on two shafts which are used for power transmission. The buffer assembly is combined with two intermediate walls to make the fuel-air mixture with the appropriate pressure flow into the combustion chamber from the compression chamber. Then, the phase angle difference between the compression and combustion rotors is changed to reduce the dissipated negative work in the compression process. In the meantime, amount of air flows from the buffer chamber to the combustion chamber in several passage designs are also simulated and compared to improve the performance of the claw engine. Engine performances between piston engine, Wankel engine and the developed claw engine are roughly estimated and compared, and it shows that the new claw engine has better performances. Besides, a special lateral arrangement with several claw rotors is also demonstrated to reveal the possibility of other the claw rotor engine configurations. Finally, an acrylic model and a prototype of the new claw rotor engine are manufactured such that the working principle of the engine can be demonstrated.
