Abstract
A practically realizable digital signaling scheme is proposed that requires a bandwidth significantly less than the Nyquist limit and at the same time achieves the same asymptotic performance as memoryless pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM). A three-step iterative procedure for constructing such schemes is presented, and examples that occupy down to about 60% of the Nyquist bandwidth are demonstrated using this simple procedure. A practical receiver structure using an adaptive breath-first trellis search algorithm is also discussed.>
