Abstract
The narratives in the Tso Chuan reflect the historical condition of the feudal lords' struggle for hegemony during the Spring and Autumn period. In this text, all of the many campaigns, go through emplotment and elucidation of their context, portraying vivid images of the individuals. Accordingly, previous scholars have always approved of this kind of military narrative as a model. This paper analyzes and discusses in depth the narratives of the Tso Chuan; using elements such as the plots and characters, and concerned with both the development process of its "search for causes and requirement of results" together with the special characteristics of its structural arrangement. It thereby proceeds with a general consideration of its significance, in this way both developing an appreciation for the charisma of its art and investigating its classical explications, using these two aspects to supplement and complement one another. Generally speaking, the narratives of the Tso Chuan, through their intricate and lively concrete re - presentation of warfare, constantly manifest and proclaim their orientation towards moral training, as well as using morality and decorum to explain success or defeat. Thus it always portrays individuals, using their characteristics of speech and deeds as concrete evidence. This manner of stressing morality and elevating decorum points to a direction towards pacifism in its explanation, a direction which conforms to the principles of the Spring and Autumn Annals, and which is far different from the military specialists.
