Abstract
Jeremy Lin, a Taiwanese-American NBA player, had led the New York Knicks to seven straight wins, sparked the “Linsanity” trend in February 2012. He soon became a famous sport star and his story could be seen on all news media in Taiwan. This study explored how news media shape sport stars. The reception analysis method was used to find out the ideologies in the news, and how audiences receive them. Furthermore, this study also examined how audiences’ reception affects by sex and age. Based on the analysis of news-texts, five ideologies were identified in television sport news: individualism, triumphantism, heroism, capitalism, and American Dream. For the audience reception studies, the results showed that most of the audiences belong to “negotiated reading” and “oppositional reading” patterns. Few audiences were found to affirm the dominant ideologies in the texts. There were no sex and age differences in the reading patterns of audiences. In addition, this study also found that the “American Dream” which lived out by Jeremy Lin barely exerted influence on people’s minds through watching sport news. We can call this “American Dream failure”.
