Abstract
Recently, there is increasing public and
scientific concern that some environmental
pollutants may cause hormone disruption in
human and wildlife. Therefore, there is an
urgent need to develop an effective assay
which can detect environmental hormone. In
this study, an integrated bioassay which
using acute responses of prepubertal female
rats will be expanded and developed to
examine effects of PCB 132 (2,2’,3,3’,4,6’-
hexachlorobiphenyl) and PCB 149
(2,2’,3,4’5’6-hexachlorobiphenyl) on
estrogenicity, hepatic enzyme activities,
thyroxine, and brain dopamine levels.
Second year of this project, it was focused to
standardize the methods of the thyroid
hormones as well as cerebral dopamine
levels. The result of this study showed that
PCB 132 and PCB 149 did not affect
dopamine levels in cerebral cortex of
prepubertal female rats between 8 and 96
mg/kg. PCB 132 did not cause any
significant changes in serum thyroid
hormones of prepubertal female rats.
However, there was a significant 30%
decrease thyroxine levels at prepubertal
female rats administered PCB 149 at 32
mg/kg.
