Abstract
A segmental block color method has been proposed for displaying pollution conditions in the Danshuei River System, which provides the geographic location and other information simultaneously on a diagram. Data used in this work was taken from a monitoring report for the Environmental Protection Agency. A total of 32 station’s along the three major branches were re-arranged into 66 sections, and data were filled into the MS Excel worksheet according to their corresponding positions. The cell block was colored in different hue levels in order to signify its concentration range. The results for the 4 seasons plotting show that the major polluting river sections are : Hsingdien River, between Shulong and Huajiang Bridges; Dahan River, between Sanyin and Fuchao Bridges; Keelung River, between Neonjiang and Chenmei Bridges. Seasonal variations have been found but can not be identified without considering the river flux and rainfall. After merging with the three branches, the water quality in the main Danshuei River was found gradually back to normal, probably due to the dilution of seawater from the Taiwan Strait. The method has clearly illustrated many information on the same worksheet, thus facilitates readers to understand quickly the general status of pollution. The type of presentation as proposed in this work may be recommended for the public uses through an internet homepage.
