Abstract
Sequence stratigraphic analysis based on
concepts of “relative sealevels dominate
depositional systems shifts” indeed improves the
stratigraphic delineation and correlation among
the Tertiary coastal and shallow marine strata in western Taiwan. According to the results in last three years,
depositional sequences are identified in these
strata, including 6 in the Oligocene, 5 in the
Lower Miocene, 3 in the Middle Miocene and 4
in the Upper Miocene. Each displays a
fluctuation of relative sealevel with
correspondent shifts of facies and depositional
system. Integrating the biostratigraphic datum
planes, the sequence stratigraphic template is
well correlated to the Global Eustatic Chart,
which not only provides the duration of each
sequence, but also reveals the influences of
tectonics and eustacy on the Tertiary sedimentation in western Taiwan.
