Abstract
The lateral stability is one of the main topics in the research of railway vehicle. This thesis discusses the applications of the newly-developed mechanical element, Inerter, to the train suspensions for the improvement in stability and performance of the full-train system. We analyze the performance benefits employing traditional inerters and mechtronic inerters. From the simulation results, the use of inerters can effectively increase the critical speed and the performance of the trains.
