Abstract
The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the effect of Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) and Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) on the steady-state and dynamic performance of Taiwan power system. In daily operation of Taiwan power system, two problems have been observed. One is the low bus voltage at Omei substation; and the other is the low frequency oscillation problem.
To improve the low voltage problem at Omei substation, proper location and capacities for the STATCOMs are determined based on power flow simulations for the system under various operating conditions. Dynamic simulations are also conducted to examine the effect of STATCOMs and PSSs on the substation dynamic voltage responses and low frequency oscillations. Three different operating conditions have been considered in the dynamic simulations.
It is found that the dynamic voltage response can be improved by the STATCOMs while the dampings for the low frequency oscillations can be improved by the PSSs. It is also concluded that there is no significant interactions between the STATCOMs and the PSSs.
