Abstract
The purpose of this project is to examine the feasibility of applying static synchronous
compensators (STATCOMs) to improve the dynamic voltage response of Taiwan power system.
The longitudinal power system in Taiwan suffers from two major problems, i.e., the area
generation-load unbalance in the three areas and the disproportionate power flows over the two existing
parallel corridors. Consequently, low voltage profiles have been observed on O-MEI bus for the system
under normal operation or under some outage conditions. It is thus necessary to devise some proper
means to improve the O-MEI bus voltage to prevent the system from voltage instability. Besides, it is
also important to improve the dynamic voltage responses under sidturbance conditions. In the present
work, STATCOMs will be employed to promote steady-state voltages and to improve the dynamic
voltage responses on O-MEI bus.
In phase 1 of this three-year project, the steady-state voltage profiles and dynamic voltage
responses of O-MEI bus after STATCOMs are installed will be analyzed. The effect of the capacities of
STATCOMs on steady-state voltage will be investigated.
