Abstract
Computer mouse was one of the most general input devices during the usage of the personal computer. There were many literatures aimed on investigating the relationship in muscular activity between the usage of the traditional and ergonomic computer mouse but rarely reported the effect on musclar activity by using different weighted mouse. This study was aim at evaluate forearm and shoulder muscle activity in using computer mice with five different weights (70G, 100G, 130G, 160G and 190G) at two various moving speeds. The muscle activity of the Right extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU), right extensor digitorum communis (ED), right carpi radialis (ECR) and right upper trapezius (Trap) were recorded by the surface electromyography and ulnar/radial deviation were registered by an electrogoniometer compared by statistic test when using five different weight. Frequently using overweight or underweight computer mice will cause musculoskeletal discomfort and symptoms in forearms and shoulders. Varied weighted mice moving at different speeds may have various effects on forearm and shoulder muscle activity. All of the twenty-five subjects performed the same task of moving the cursor onto a circle and clicking with the five different weight mice at two various moving speeds. The lowest ECU and ED muscle activity occurred in using the 130G mouse at the normal speed, but that occurred in using the 70G mouse at the low speed. At a specific mouse moving speed, there will be a corresponding optimal weight to the mouse to ensure some forearm muscle activity being the lowest.
