Abstract
Small and medium businesses
constitute the majority of Taiwan
businesses. Entrepreneurship is the heart
of the start-up of small and medium
businesses. Although the
entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship
behavior has been vastly studied in
western society, but the study of
Chinese entrepreneurship and
entrepreneurship behavior is just in the beginning. The objective of the present
study is tried to understand the
characteristics of Chinese entrepreneurs
and to construct a Chinese Entrepreneur
Aptitude Scale(CEAS).
Returned oversea students have
been contributed very much to the
development of high technology
industry in Taiwan. Taiwan oversea
students rarely come back to Taiwan
until 1987. At that time the economic
condition of the US was stagnant while
the economic condition of Taiwan was
just start to climbing. A few oversea
students started to come back to Taiwan
for work or to setup new businesses.
Most of these returned students were
highly experienced professionals in the
high technology industries, especially
come from the Silicon Valley. At that
time Taiwan government had setup
several policies to encourage the return
of these oversea students and
professionals. The social network of
these returned professionals and
entrepreneurs also build a strong
professional network between Taiwan
and the Silicon Valley.
Present study adopted both
qualitative and quantitative approach to
find out the characteristics of Chinese
entrepreneurs. In the part of qualitative
research, a content analysis of the
Chinese youth entrepreneur’s biography
is conducted. In the part of quantitative
research, the CEAS is constructed based
on the proposed four conceptual
dimensions of entrepreneur
characteristics. These four dimensions
are autonomy & self-discipline, social
networking, innovation, leadership &
communication. The reliability and
construct validity of the CEAS are
relatively high. The results of the
quantitative research are consistent with
the qualitative research’s findings. The
results show that gender, marriage status,
age, religion, education and prior
business experience about the industry
desired to build up a new venture are
significant demographic characteristics
to discriminate the successful
entrepreneur and general sample. Most
of the results are also consistent with the
literatures ’ finding, except that the
Chinese entrepreneurs are more
emphasis on business ethics and social
responsibility.
The research findings have both
theoretical and practical implications.
On the theoretical aspect the conceptual
framework of Chinese entrepreneur
traits will be particular interest with
Chinese social network and Chinese
traditional value system, while the
CEAS can be used for theoretical
research and practical guidance about
startup companies.
