Abstract
Maps are important cultural heritages that document mankind¡¦ s living space and environment. For the past 400 years, residents and passengers have used maps to ducument the environmental changes and cultural developments in Taiwan. These maps also provide precious resources for K- 12 education and localized education. This research is a subproject of the Digital Map Museum - ¡¥Taiwan Cultural and Ecological Maps¡¨, which integrates technology of geographic information system (GIS), topographic maps, and other digital data to produce maps of natural and human environment. The digital museum is divided into the following five sections:
1. Topographic Maps (1/ 50,000): Topographic maps (1/ 50,000) are made by the current digital data, and are stored in the form of PDF files. It is easy to print and to read on line. Users can also use the searching system to look for the map of a specific area.
2. Time Maps: This section presents Taiwan¡¦s administrative maps back in history. Users are able to understand meanings of different maps. The images of Taiwan Town Maps will also help to illustrate cultures and environment in the past.
3. Thematic Maps: This section focuses on various cultural and ecological factors. It uses GIS to make various theme maps. These maps include population maps, administrative maps, urban maps, traffic maps, topological maps, geological maps, climate maps, and so on.
4. Technological Maps : This section provides maps and images taken from remote sensing satellites, allowing people to observe new developments in cartography. Images are presented in the form of VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language), showing users the geological terrains in Taiwan.
5. Old Maps of Taiwan : This section collect historical maps of Taiwan, dating from
1885 to 1923.
This website not only provides exhibitions of maps and a searching engine, but also various vector GIS files of roads, water systems, and administrative boundaries. Users can integrate, enlarge and reduce different spaces directly on the website. Moreover, this website can provide teaching resources for the localized education in Taiwan.
