Abstract
The following research attempt to examine a specific selection of bronzes in the National Palace Museum. It is the two-years research proposal. As the research report of the first year, the vessels focused on are those from the metropolitan area and various states of the Western Chou period. These style, forms, inscriptions, and casting methods were examined. The regional style of various areas and states in comparison to the greater Western Chou tradition of the Central Plains, and in comparison with other regional styles have been drawn, and development of the various Chou bronze styles. Except the metropolitan area, the Western Chou bronzes have been excavated from the areas including Laoning, Hepei, Shandong, Shanhsi, Henan, Anhui, Changhsi, etc. The history states such as Wei(衛), Chin(晉), Yen(燕), Lu(魯), Yin(應), Tsen(曾) etc, have been identified on the basis of inscriptions and excavated sites. Form this large source of archaeological data, the period and regional styles of the Western Chou bronzes have been established. On the basis of the research report of the first year, the relationship of the Western Chou bronzes between the National Palace Museum and the Japan Collection have been analyzed. The New explanation of the historical role of the Western Chou bronzes of the National Palace Museum have been made.
