Abstract
Thirteen strains out of the thirty-four
mercury-resistant isolates obtained in
the first year were selected for the
present study. A 16S rDNA-based
phylogeny showed that they included
species distributed in the genera
Alteromonas, Bacillus, Hyphomonas,
Pseudoalteromonas and Pseudomonas.
The strains belonging to Pseudomonas
expressed the greatest Hg2+-reducing
activity as measured by AAS. MerA
genes were detected from all the strains
except the one that was identified to be
an Alteromonas sp. The twelve strains
that were detected to have merA genes
differed from the known mercuryresistant
bacteria in their merA gene
sequences and in their mer gene series.
Their mer gene series were located in
chromosomes rather than in plasmids.
Cloning of an E. coli strain with these
genes significantly enhanced the
mercury resistance of the strain.
