Abstract
Nitrilotriacetate (NTA) has been widely used as substitute to replace polyphosphate as detergent builder. Investigating the effects of mobilization of heavy metals from sediments via NTA is the primary objectives of this work. The effects of NTA on the mobilization of heavy metals is increased as the shaking period increases and reaches the apparent equilibrium concentration after 24–48 hours. The hardness concentration significantly affects the formation of heavy metal‐NTA complexes. Using 20 mg/1 of NTA and 6 days of shaking period, the mobilization percentage is around 8 to 15% for Cu, 1 to 7% for Zn, 7 to 10% for Pb, and 7 to 30% for Cd, respectively. To biodegrade the trisodium salt of NTA, the acclimation time is about 6–9 days. The acclimation time for biodegradation of metal‐NTA complexes is in the order of Cu > Cd > Zn > Pb > Ca.
