Abstract
To improve the content and quality of medical
ethics education so as to promote the ethical awareness,
basic knowledge, and thinking skill in terms of ethical
reasoning of medical students and practitioners have
been a central goal of the current medical education
reformed in Taiwan. And this is especially true and
important to the post-SARS health care quality
improvement reform as taken by the Taiwanese
medical communities. This 3-year project intends to
explore the methods of ethical analysis and develop
comprehensive course and materials based on
integrating both ‘a systematic and theoretical review’
and ‘a case-based analysis’ for medical ethics
education. This first year project has collected,
reviewed, and analyzed literatures concerning the
debate between principlism and casuistry; as well as
inquired into the appropriate teaching contents and
methods for medical ethics at different stages of
medical students, residents, and practicing doctors.
The researcher has selected both classical and
indigenous cases in clinical ethics and developed
practical case-analysis educational materials. A
number of papers have resulted from this year’s
research and published in Taiwanese and international
medical ethics and medical education journals.
