Abstract
Tocotrienols, a lesser-known member of the vitamin E family, have increasingly received global attention, especially among the scientific community. Structurally, the only difference between tocotrienols and tocopherols is that the former possess three double bonds in the isoprenoid side chain. Recent findings have found that tocotrienols possess superior pharmacological properties as compared with tocopherols including antioxidant, anticancer, hypocholesterolemic, anntithrom botic and neuroprotective properties. Several theories on the mechanism of action of toocotrienols with respect to antioxidant, hypocholesterolemic and anti-cancer activities have been postulated. Tocotrienols are concluded to have great potential for the prevention and/or treatment off cardiovascular disease, cancer and neuro-degenrative disease. In this paper, we review the pharmacological properties and potential mechanism(s) of action of palm tocotrienols.
