Abstract
In the present study, hydrodynamic coefficients of a submarine model are studied by conducting a series of captive model tests using Vertical Planar Motion Mechanism (VPMM) testing system that existing in the Department of Engineering Science and Ocean Engineering, National Taiwan University. These model conditions, such as fully appended model, model without starboard bow plane, model without sail, model without sail and upper rudder are tested. Through comparison of the results of different model conditions, the effects on the hydrodynamic coefficients of these appendages, such as bow plane, sail, rudder are identified. The results of the present experimental study may be used not only to validate computer code for the calculation of submarine hydrodynamics, but also to the development of mathematical model of submarine maneuvering motions.
