Abstract
The study proposes to examine various
factors that may contribute to explaining
African countries’ decision to recognize either
Taipei or Beijing over the years.
As far as African countries are concerned,
recognition issue can be analyzed from three
perspectives: international, national and bycoastal
relationship. Six factors will be used to
evaluate the triangular ties. They are:
(1) the evolution of Taipei’s and Beijing’s
diplomatic relations with African
countries;
(2) the frequency of high-level officials
from Taipei or Beijing visiting African
countries;
(3) Taipei’s and Beijing’s trade relations
with African countries;
(4) the degree of political stability of an
African country;
(5) the degree of economic development
of an African country;
All information related to the study comes
from official material and record. All in all, the
importance of this research lies in the fact that
it can provide further information for Taipei
to reduce its diplomatic risk in Africa.
