Abstract
The sintering rates of whisker‐reinforced ceramics and glasses have been calculated. The calculations reveal that retardation of sintering may occur because of the development of hydrostatic tensile stress in the matrix. The application of pressure to counteract the retardation and of an initial gap between the whisker and the matrix to delay material contact are addressed.
