Abstract
This study present the results of
aquatic insects fauna and related
ecological studies conducted at 5
sampling sites in the upper Keelung
River, Taiwan, from Aug., 1999 to Jul.,
2000. The environmental factors and
the aquatic insect composition were
investigated monthly to define the
relationship between aquatic insect
community structure and environmental
parameters by using the analysis of PCA
(principal component analysis)
ordination technique. The analysis of
one-way ANOVA indicated that most of
aquatic insect parameters and
environmental parameters were
significant affected by site, but not by
season. The aquatic insect parameters
and environmental parameters were
significant correlated. Ephemeroptera,
Trichoptera and Diptera were the most
numerous taxa both in taxa richness and
abundance. The analysis of PCA
determined that the taxa richness,
diversity and diversity indices of the
aquatic insect were significantly affected
by BOD, concentration of phosphate,
conductivity and turbidity. In the given
range of pH variation, the number of
species and the abundance of aquatic
insect were positive correlated with the
pH value. The environmental factors
affecting the distribution of aquatic
insect and their longitudinal and
temporal changes were more obvious by
the biplot of the PCA ordination.
