Abstract
with the elastic properties of the material
through which they propagate. By using
the acoustic fields to form an image, one
can study the spatial variations in these
properties directly. The acoustic microscope
thus provides a unique capability for
investigating aspects of material that are
not revealed by either the light or electron
microscopes, but require a comparison of
the acoustic signal measured by the microscope
with corresponding theoretical calculations.
In this three-years’ project, we propose to
develop a lens-less acoustic microscope system,
and develop theory and technique to
measure the material constants as well as residual
stresses of electronic elements by the
system. The proposed works of this first
project-year are to fabricate both line-focus
and point-focus lens-less acoustic microscope
transducers.
