Abstract
We present RealSense and SmartChoice, technologies that enable users to easily select the target device in multi-device environment with smartphone. RealSense continuously collects the directional heading of each phone to calculate the virtual position of each user. SmartChoice continuously sends infrared signal to all devices in the environment to detect the target device.
The number of smartdevice is increasing, including smartphone, smartTV, and so on. User can control these smartdevices directly or using their mobile devices to interact with them. In the interaction between these devices, users need to select the target from the traditional linear menu to establish the connection. When there are more items in the menu, it will be much more difficult to select the right target. User has to search the target’s name from the list of all devices. And they can’t associate the name with device easily. This work focused on user prefers of selecting device in multi-device environment. We compared RealSense with linear menu, pie menu and NFC, and compared SmartChoice with linear menu, indoor map, camera and throwing. Our results show that participants preferred RealSense than other sharing interactions especially they were unacquainted with each other. For SmartChoice, although pointing took more time because of the requirement to point precisely within a range, it got the highest scores on usability and intuition.
