Abstract
The free running model test system was set up to do the self-propulsion test in calm sea condition. The test results could be used to estimate the propulsion performance of full scale ship and to calculate the attained energy efficiency design index. The free running model can sail by his propeller, rudder and the thrust force produced by a wind turbine which is corresponding to Ra in calm sea condition. The free running model can sail almost straight which yawing angle is within 1 degree. The measured data can be used to predict the propulsion performance of full scale ship and to calculate the attained energy efficiency design index. The test model is an oil tanker model with bulb bow and the length of the model is 4.55 meters. Both the self-propulsion and free running tests were conducted. The model speed, rpm, thrust, torque of propeller, pitching angle and yawing angle were measured. The comparison of the test results between the self-propulsion and free running model tests are made to test the conformance. The test results show that the rpm, thrust and torque of the self-propulsion test and free running model test are about the same when the test speed is smaller than 1.139 m/s(14 knots for full scale ship). The rpm, thrust and torque of the free running model are higher than that of the self-propulsion when the model speed is over 1.139 m/s. And the thrust deduction coefficient and effective wake of the free running model test are respectively 0.05 and 0.07 higher than that of the self-propulsion test. However, the hull efficient is about the same between the free running model test and self-propulsion test. The trend of the propeller efficient with the model speed is also about the same between the free running model test and self-propulsion test. The difference of the relative rotative efficiency between free running model and self-propulsion is about 5%. The difference of the BHP predicted by free running model test and self-propulsion test is within 1%. And the difference of the attained energy efficiency design index calculated from the free running model test and self-propulsion test is within 1%. It concludes that the test results of free running model test in calm sea are consistent with the test results of self-propulsion test in calm sea condition.
