Abstract
Color Doppler ultrasound (CDU) can be applied to the investigation of abdominal problems including liver diseases. CDU is useful in the following fields: (1) The evaluation of hemodynamic status of splenoportal system. The flow direction, velocity, and volume of portal veins as well as splenic vein can be obtained and correlated with clinical status. Portal vein thrombosis can also be detected easily. (2) The demonstration of intraabdominal collateral vessels. Spontaneous splenorenal shunt, dilated left gastric vein or reopened paraumbilical vessels are easily detected. For patients who have portal hypertension and ever received shunting operation, CDU can be used to check the patency of the shunt. (3) The differential diagnosis of common focal hepatic tumors, i.e. hepatocellular carcinoma, metastatic liver cancer, and hemangioma. The detection of intratumoral arterial Doppler signals is a useful sign for the recognition of malignant tumors with the diameter larger than 2 cm. (4) The preoperative and postoperative evaluation of patients receiving liver transplantation. The patency of hepatic artery is important for the survival of graft liver. (5) The demonstration of anomalies of hepatic veins as well as inferior vena cava. Budd-Chiari syndrome can be diagnosed by using CDU.
