Abstract
As the home networks grow rapidly, different physical media in home networks will largely affect the structure and performance of home networking. Thus the choice of communication media for home networking is an important issue. Some disadvantages of the Ethernet and wireless solutions, such as the building re-wiring or obstruction problems, can be avoided by using the power line network structure. However, the performance of power line network will degrade because of the load mismatch issues, multi-path effect and other noise problems.
In this note, we first introduce the basic concepts of high-speed home networking and power line communication, including the structure of power line bridge and the process of transmission and distribution of data over power line systems. Then the current status of power line communication technology development will be described, and some basic knowledge for time-varying dynamic properties of the power line communication channels will be surveyed. Thirdly, we suggest a power line channel model for high speed home networking and analyze the power line communication network with branches about its basic parameters of characteristic impedance, transmission factor, and reflection factor. Finally, some rules of choosing propagation paths and calculating weighting factors are provided, and comparison of simulation results with the actual measurement results are made.
