Abstract
This research provides a way to establish thermodynamic models of ionic liquids in Aspen Plus, does the process design about extractive distillation using ionic liquids as entrainer and compares the extractive distillation using ionic liquids as entrainer with the one using conventional entrainer. Acetone /methanol system and isopropanol (IPA) dehydration system are investigated. In acetone/methanol system, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as entrainer and 1,3-dimethylimidazolium dimethylphosphate ([MMIM][DMP]) as entrainer are investigated. In IPA dehydration system, DMSO as entrainer and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM][OAC]) as entrainer are studied under 99.9999 mol% and 99.99 mol% IPA product requirements. In acetone/methanol system, two-flashers process can be used to recycle [MMIM][DMP]. The two-flashers process has 16.43% reduction in total annual cost (TAC). The operating cost and the capital cost are 12.71% and 30.41% lower respectively. In IPA dehydration system, two-flashers process or flasher/stripper process can be used to recycle [EMIM][OAC]. Under 99.9999 mol% IPA product requirement, the two processes have 0.37% and 0.04% increases in TAC respectively. Under 99.99 mol% IPA product requirement, the two processes have 7.19% and 8.34% decreases in TAC respectively. Because of the low volatility of ionic liquids and the large boiling point differences between ionic liquids and normal materials, ionic liquids would not loss in the process and can be recoverd by two flashers under low pressure condition. However, high boiling point of ionic liquids and low thermal stability of some ionic liquids make the recycle of ionic liquids difficult, so the equipments need to be operated under lower pressure condition. Therefore, ionic liquids with better ability to enhance relative volatility of the mixture to be separated and better thermal stability would be better entrainer.
