Abstract
Cross-cultural mingling events create social bonding and cultural exchange but challenge participants, particularly those from collectivist cultures, in expressing individuality and building connections. Existing tools focus on adaptation to external norms but ignore the empowerment of self-presentation. Through in-depth interviews with participants experienced in mingling events, we identified key purposes, challenges, and strategies. Findings reveal the importance of distinct, memorable characteristics for fostering connections, addressing common struggles with being remembered, or forming deeper bonds. To address these needs, we proposed an LLM-supported self-presentation ideation tool that helps users uncover, refine, and amplify their characteristics through unstructured inputs and visualizations. This work supports active participation and promotion in diverse mingling contexts.
