Abstract
Because of advantages such as high-speed operation, low energy consumption and low heat emission, pneumatic drilling systems are widely used in the fields of machining tools and dental equipments. In order to comprehend its performance and to enhance its further development, the goal of this thesis is to develop an precision power measurement system.
According to our surveying evaluation of the current power measurement methods for dental handpieces, this thesis proposes using non-contact magnetic loading principle to develop a novel power measurement system for dental handpiece. Through displacement control, the magnetic loading can be smoothly varied to replace the easily interfered frictional loading principle. Besides the loading units, the power measurement system is comprised of the holder for dental handpiece, sensors for power measurement and control unit.
For performance verification of our developed power measurement system, the dental handpiece with the twin-powered micro turbine of MicroP Technology (Taiwan) Inc. is chosen as the testing specimen. The non-contact magnetic loading unit can successfully provide smooth and stable braking force for the high-speed rotating cartridge, so that the power performance of cartridge under different air supplies, axial and radial loadings can be measured. The experimental results show that, the maximum power occurs in the range of the 80 to 90 percent of the free running speed, and the maximum energy transformation efficiency appears at 70 percent of the free running speed.
