Abstract
Conventionally, the confinements in rectangular concrete columns are composed of rectangular hoops and cross ties. It takes not only time to form the cages but also is hard in quality control. Besides, cross ties with 90-degree and 135-degree bend which are to be alternated along the height and around the perimeter of the section are permitted to ease construction, but the 90-degree end can possibly leading to premature failure under severe earthquake. In order to improve those weaknesses in traditional confinements for rectangular concrete columns, series tests with alternate confinements for rectangular concrete columns are conducted in this research, including axial compressive tests of full-scale rectangular specimens and lateral cyclic loading test of full scaled columns. There are total 28 alternate confinements been evaluated in the axial compressive tests, including 2 traditional patterns and 26 new patterns. Among the 26 new patterns, two promising details were selected for further lateral cyclic loading test to find out their strength and abilities of energy dissipation. Test results showed that spiral hoops can be successfully used in rectangular concrete columns by suitable combinations, and the behaviors are even better than traditional rectangular specimens. Confinements with four spirals and five spirals are proven to be much more excellent and effective then the others. Non-linear finite element analytic models with detail confinements were built to predict the results of compressive tests. Behavior of confined concrete with the new proposed details can all be well caught by these analytic models.
