Abstract
In this second-year project, we aimed at examining the
role of component and structure in Chinese character
recognition by using the paradigm of repetition
blindness (RB). Results showed that regardless of the
frequency of characters, robust RB for components
was consistently found in all experiments, confirming
the findings in the previous year. However, the RB
effects for semantic and phonetic components were
different across different conditions and at different
time courses, indicating separate representations for
semantic and phonetic components. Component RB is
constrained by character structure, indicating the importance of structure in recognizing Chinese characters.
