Abstract
The objectives of this proposed study are to develop a microscopic-PIV system and to apply it to the measurements of micro-channel flows. Based on the traditional PIV technique, new optical system and signal processing technique were developed for the new measurement system. The spatial resolution for this system was estimated to be within 1mμor smaller in later development. This new system can be applied to the measurements of two-dimensional flow field of micro-channels or other MEMS devices. Since the length scales for the MEMS microfluidic devices are in the order of 1-100μm, the traditional flow diagnostic tools could not be used for the flow measurements. The experimental measurements for the microfluidic devices have been limited to obtain only the bulk properties of the flow, such as the wall pressure, the mean temperature and the bulk velocity. The new microscopic-PIV system can be used to measure the whole-field instantaneous flow velocities of the micron-scale fluidic devices. The results of this study can be further applied for the measure -ments of other MEMS and bio-devices.
