Abstract
Physicians are main decision-makers in
clinical care activities. More than 80% of
health expenditures spent in hospitals are
controlled by physicians. Therefore, the
practice patterns of physicians have
tremendous impact on hospital costs.
Moreover, about 25% of NHI’s health care
expenditures are consumed by medical
centers. It is thus important to monitor the
practice patterns of physicians in medical
centers for policy makers.
Physicians in medical centers practice in
teams rather than individually. The purpose
of this study is thus to evaluate the technical
efficiency and efficient characteristics of
physician teams. In addition, the impact of
team characteristics on efficiency is
investigated as well.
310 surgeons practicing in six major
specialties are included in this study, and
they are divided into 28 sub-specialties teams.
Through DEA CCR model and TPREG
model, the efficiency scores and efficient
characteristics of these teams in 1996 are
analyzed. Tobit regression is further
employed to analyze the impact of team
characteristics on efficiency scores.
The results show that among 28 teams eight
2
teams are relatively efficient. Moreover,
while specialty A is inpatient-oriented,
specialty C and D are outpatient-oriented,
specialty B, E, and F are balance-oriented.
However, none of the team characteristics
significantly influences the efficiency scores.
Other latent factors which may have
influence on efficiency scores need to be
further investigated.
