Abstract
Since 1985, the world public opinion has paid more attention to the situation of the South Pacific region because of the penetration of the Soviet influence into this region. The R.O.C. has undertaken grand efforts to promote relations with island nations in order to extend its international arena. This paper was realized after a visit of the author to the Papua New Guinea where had been held in May 1990 joint meetings of committees on Economic Issues and on Trade of the South Pacific Forum. It tries to find out the real economic situation and islander’s needs in the South Pacific so that it can elaborate new policy orientation which will be useful to promote economic cooperation between the R.O.C. and island nations. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part is to introduce a brief image of the South Pacific Island Nations’ geographical and political situation and its importance to the R.O.C. The second part tries to analyze the social-economic characteristics of island nations. The third part studies the development of the South Pacific regionalism. The last part has some propositions on ways and means to promote economic cooperation between the R.O.C. and island nations.
