Abstract
The 「investigation」 means that using the seven prinples bringing up by Professor James Hsu to treat the origin and development of ancient Chinese characters on 308 words of the first half of juan 5 of the Shuowenjiezi.And to build sequences of these characters.
The seven principles are:era of materials, character of materials, implication of character creation, graphical degree,axiom of changing forms, replacement of component, law of character creation. An character appears in some era, possible not belong the era.It can be to keep the former forms of character, or it’s a new form of character.Thus, the principle of character’s era has its restriction. Than other principles can assistant to judge the sequence.First, we should prove the creative meaning of character, as close to the real situation, we can get more reasonable explanation of character’s development.
Through the use of seven principles, we can build a dependable sequence of ancient chinese character’s changing form. The sequence provide more help in division of history into periods and character’s explanation.
