Abstract
The experience of time is a key factor in conscious experience, and many models have been proposed to explain its structure. These models can be roughly grouped into three camps: the cinematic view, retentionalism, and extensionalism. These candidates differ from each other mainly on the length of each act of consciousness and its content. However, most current discussions on them overlook some special states of consciousness, namely the altered states of consciousness (ASC), which present unusual changes in how time is experienced. We investigate empirical studies on the distinctive phenomenological features of these overlooked cases to see the explanatory power of the three groups of models. There are two main characteristics that will be taken into account: alteration in the experience of time’s speed and the seemingly timeless experience. By analyzing these features of ASC, we compare the three models of temporal consciousness to see whether they sufficiently accommodate and explain them and if these hypotheses are supported empirically. After the analysis, it seems that all three categories of models fall short of completely capturing some of these alterations. The result suggests a need to revise current models to better account for these cases. Future research should address these problems and work on modifying a model that can more properly accommodate alterations and bridge to relevant empirical findings. We also call for more empirical research corresponding to the possible hypotheses of the experience of time in ASC.
