Abstract
DOCSIS is a good access network solution and platform for provisioning multiple services. However, from cable operators’ point of view, a provisioned service may traverse the heterogeneous networks or administrative boundaries. The complexity of managing these multiple-service overlaying on multiple-network makes it more desirable for network administrators to have a general pursuing tool. Therefore, an object model that is capable of accommodating various objects corresponding to diverse services, networks, equipments, and Quality-of-Service (QoS) parameter sets is required to achieve the pursuing tool, and is also essential to guarantee the service quality.
In this thesis, we propose an object model aiming at meeting these requirements. Object-oriented design concepts like classification and inheritance relationships are first employed in the generic model, and then various specializations of the generic classes are discussed along with practical service examples. Based on the proposed model, called the DMSOM model, the associated QoS parameter sets will be represented in the bottom of hierarchical architecture, and help to validate the service quality explicitly on a per-service and per network element basis. Next we will present the implementation of object database. We will also show the added value of the object model – the route discovery capability and the inventory database of the managed network, including its physical link. Finally we will present a framework how to operate the object model in the field to achieve the goal of network management.
