Abstract
The main idea of fog computing is to provide computing, storage, and networking services on the edge of network. Inspired by fog computing, a concept named virtual local-hub (VLH) is proposed, to eliminate the restrictions of using wearable devices. This chapter provides information on a system design based on the concept of VLH to utilize edge devices to provide low-latency services for wearable devices. To make wearable devices be served by edge devices instead of the local-hub, it modifies the system behavior of wearable devices. Since the system modifications are transparent to both users and developers, existing applications can naturally fit into the system without being rewritten. Considering the limited computing capacity of edge devices, the chapter considers the idea of VLH to provide common and native function modules (e.g. localization and speech recognition) as a wearable service for users instead of running user-specific virtual machine. ? 2020 JohnWiley & Sons, Inc.
