Abstract
Abstract A mycoparasitic hyphomycete on the grass‐parasitic ascomycete Epichloë typhina from Germany was identified as Clonostachys epichloë Schroers with morphological and molecular methods. A delicately balanced mutualism is known for the host fungus E. typhina and flies of the genus Botanophila . Studies of type material of Sphacelia typhina subsp. aeruginosa Sacc. collected in France in the 19 th century revealed the synonymy of this taxon with Clonostachys epichloë , hitherto reported only for America and Asia under this name. Since C. epichloë apparently is highly host‐specific and more common in Europe than previously known, it might benefit from this mutualism and reduce the development of E. typhina as well as the associated Botanophila flies.
