Abstract
Recently, nanomaterials combining organic/inorganic components have been rapidly emerging in biomedical diagnostic/therapeutic applications. Among various nanomaterials, silica is a promising carrier because of its biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity and easy functionality. Herein, we report a novel method based on templating microemulsion to synthesize uniform hollow silica nanospheres and yolk-shell silica nanospheres by ternary and quaternary water-in-oil (w/o) reverse microemulsion systems. To the best of our knowledge, no studies revealed the synthesis of hollow silica sphere based on the reverse microemulsion systems. Hollow spherical silica nanoparticles have potential applications in catalysis, separation, cell-labeling, and drug delivery.
It is well-known that gold nanoparticles are unstable against sintering, resulting in loss of catalytic activity. Herein, we demonstrate that gold nanopsrticles < 5 nm encapsulated in silica hollow spheres was fabricated to prevent sintering in high temperature and applied for p-nitrophenol reduction and CO oxidation. In addition, the multiplexing hollow nanospheres obtained by synthesis of fluorescent nano-hollow-spheres of silica with encapsulated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@FITC-HS) could be use for biolabeling applications.
