Abstract
Among all the ASEAN countries, Vietnam has the lowest level of labor productivity. Many solutions have been offered, such as using modern technologies or new equipment; however, the costs are still too high. This study suggests that a better way to improve labor productivity in the construction industry in Vietnam is to understand the country’s human needs. To complete the study, the author distributed a survey based on Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs to determine how important a set of motivations closely related to labor productivity were to three groups: workers, foremen, and engineers. The results of the survey showed that and the ranking of different motivations, as well as demotivation factors, were in accordance with Maslow’s theory. In addition, the author discovered that the identities of the teams of workers (for example, Northerners vs. Southerners, and Vietnamese vs. people from other countries) influenced their different desires. Vietnamese employees have too many concerns outside of work; the lack of motivating factors and an excess of demotivating factors make them feel unhappy at work, causing them to work slower than normal. Therefore, this study not only identifies the motivations in order of importance to Vietnamese workers, but also proposes some solutions that can be applied in the construction field.
