Abstract
Abstract The adaptability of varying spindle speed cutting on turning operations has been studied by the investigation of its effects on machining stability, workpiece surface roughness, and tool life. Varying spindle speed is achieved by adding a voltage with sinusoidal waveform of preset amplitude and frequency to the input of the spindle motor. The results show that the larger the amplitude and frequency of the imposing sinusoidal voltage, the better the machining stability will be. When a lathe is operated at a high cutting speed, the tool life resulted from varying spindle speed cutting is longer than that from fixed spindle speed cutting. Furthermore, an increase of the amplitude and frequency of the sinusoidal voltage has a favorable effect on tool life. The surface roughness does not deteriorate under varying spindle speed cutting.
