Abstract
Alcohol is one of the most
wildly self-administrated
psychoactive drugs in the world. Because various kinds of cognitive function such as attention, visual perception and judgment are influenced in alcohol intoxication, drunken driving has became a major cause of traffic accidents. The toxic effects of alcohol correlate roughly with the blood concentration. Almost all behavioral skills are impaired while the blood alcohol concentration higher than 100 mg/dl. There is no consistent evidence that BAL below 50 mg/dl impair any behavior in most individuals. Therefore, most countries defined “safe’ limit of alcohol concentration for driving as 50mg/dI in blood and 0.25mg/I in breath.
In Taiwan, drunken driving has became the second important cause in traffic accidents recently. There is a similar definition of drunken driving while the breath alcohol concentration above 0.25 mg/i in our traffic law. There was no formal study on the neurobehavioral performance after alcohol administration in Taiwan till now. Because Chinese people are highly sensitive and have low tolerance to alcohol genetically , a lower safe alcohol level for driving shall be considered. Therefore we design a study to evaluate the influence on the behavioral skills associated with driving under different amount of alcohol consumption.
