Abstract
Treatment of 4-aminobenzyl esters with Al2O3 in DCM at rt afforded the dealkylative dimerized 4,4′-diamino-diphenylmethanes in satisfactory yield. The reaction may proceed via a quinone methide iminium ion intermediate, which may then undergo Michael type addition followed by retro-aldol extrusion of a formaldehyde species. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
