Abstract
Some research results have documented the phenomenon that interactivity of media helped improving human information processing. That is, when people have control on information they acquire, their information processing performance is enhanced (Klayman, 1988; Kuhn & Ho, 1980; Ariely, 2000). On the Internet, there are two ways of information control, “push“ and “pull”, which provides higher information control for people than the former. Does this imply that the “pull” way of information control will affect human information processing more positively than the “push” way? If it is so, is the effect similar for people with different degree of expertise on the information they process? As suggested by prevalent research results of cognitive psychology: people actively bring out the information stored in memory when they process new information at hand (Chase & Simon, 1973; Kahneman & Tversky, 1972). If the knowledge of the information searcher is not enough to lead his/her attention to focus on relevant information, then the “pull” way of control would not be as effective as used by experts. When experts are given freedom to search information at their own choice, they are more efficient in search information because they focus their attention on relevant information. On the other, when information searcher does not have enough knowledge to be on the right track, the “push” way might be useful to “push” the relevant information into his/her attention and hopefully, further onto deeper processing, such as memory. In another word, the effect of different degrees of information control inherited in “pull” and “push” on the Internet could be different for people with different expertise. For further investigation on this issue, this research proposal is offered.
