Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of ellagic acid standard (EAS) and partial-purified ellagic acid concentrate (EAC) prepared from strawberry pomaces by Ames test, mouse lymphoma L5178Y tk+/- assay and in vivo ICR mice erythrocyte micronuclei assay. Neither EAS nor EAC revealed any evidences of mutagenicity on five Salmonella typhimurium strains (TA98, TA100, TA102, TA1535 and TA97) either in the presence or absence of S9 activation. In mouse lymphoma LS178Y tk+/- assay, EAS showed 50% cytotoxicity at the concentration of 20 ppm compared to vehicle (DMSO)-treated controls and EAC showed without any cytotoxicity at the concentration of highest solubility (10 ppm). EAS and EAC had no significant mutagenicity compared to vehicle of DMSO solvent. In the results of in vivo genotoxicity on 3-month-old ICR mice, both EAS and EAC (100 mg/kg BW) exhibited without any increase on the erythrocyte micro- nucleation compared to DMSO-treated controls. Our results indicate there's no obvious mutagenicity or genetoxicity of EAS and EAC on these in vitro and in vivo tests.
