Abstract
Using anaerobic biological method in treating domestic sewage can generate methane so that the domestic wastewater treatment plant can be an energy yield facility but not energy sink plant. However, it is very difficulty to anaerobically treat domestic sewage in very short hydraulic detection time due to the hydrolysis, acidogenesis and methanogenesis steps for sugar, protein and lipid. To fully understanding the bio-transformation of domestic sewage, it is very important to quantify and qualitify these three components in domestic sewage. This study assesses the methods that are appropriate in quantifing and qualitifing the sugar, protein and lipid component in domestic sewage. This study has shown that Anthrone method can be used on carbohydrates, Lowry method can be used on proteins, and Infrared Spectrometric method can be used on fat. The quantitation limit (LOQ) and the detection limit (LOD) of each method can detect the range of urban wastewater effectively. Additionally, the actual urban sewage test confirms there is no problem such as substrate consumption and interference in the research method. It is feasible for the application of urban wastewater. With these methods, the percentages of organic components in the wastewater were defined. Lipid is the highest and sugar is the lowest ratio in domestic wastewater. The results of sugar, protein and lipid distribution can be used as a basis for follow-up study on the degradation mechanism of anaerobic biodegradation.
