Abstract
Abstract
With the advance of technology and rapid development of mobile communications, the use of GPS (Global Positioning System) has been quickly transformed from its former military purposes and guidance for ships, to a wide number of applications in modern daily life. In the aspect of communications, the mobile data service has innovated from the earlier radio BB Call, to GSM (Global System for Mobile Basic), leading to the development of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) to give us today’s Third Generation communication skills.
This research aims to combine the exact positioning ability of GPS with the function of wireless transmission of GPRS, and to build up an operating system for far remote monitoring. This GPS system can receive the positioning information at the first time and immediately transmit it to the monitoring station through GPRS.
We use a GPS receiver and a GPRS module of the communication to test the moving tracks. The test area is inside NTU (National Taiwan University) campus. The two methods of experiment are by foot and bicycle. The local monitoring station can observe the moving tracks by wireless transmission. If the course of moving deviated from the preset one, we can transmit signals to correct the errors from the monitoring station in time.
Results show that positioning precision is rather high from the straight road test while using this set of system. The biggest inaccuracy is within 3 meters. As for winding road testing, the result sometimes be departed during turning. The biggest inaccuracy is within 15 meters. Basically these are all acceptable ranges. Yet, not all turnings have the phenomenon of departure. Therefore the positioning inaccuracy in the turnings is the focal point in future.
This study has improved the traditional remote monitoring system with GPS/GSM. Our system can increase the transmission speed of data and reduce the communication cost.
